I can see how you may dislike the less vibrant colours on the layouts you pointed out.
Anyway, my point is: it's obvious that the owner of this forum is creating hundreds of low quality tutorials just to generate traffic and make money from the abundance of advertisements he displays.
In my opinion, he may make money in the short term but I doubt he will in the long term. If you write low quality tutorials you'll get high traffic for a couple of days then barely any afterwards - all of the traffic is from tutorials databases. If you write quality tutorials you will get inward links from websites other than tutorials databases which means long term traffic.
edit: Please tell me the link to the tutorial similar to my layout, I'm interested to see what he came up with.
I hope you don't think that this one is better than mine >< -

The treading on the top, and the grove below the menu at the top and above the copyright at the bottom are very nice ideas. As for the "usability" that freelancer was complaining about, the tutorial is hard to use in a website because of the gradient background (I'm guessing that's what he's saying), but there are ways around that.
As for his sites, the first one is a forum skin. Let's be honest, how much thought goes into what a forum looks like? All forums pretty much have the same layout and a tri-color scheme, but I would say his is definitely not as good as vBulletin. His second site about the Business is not too bad, but Admin already made a tutorial that resembles this layout, I actually like Admin's better. Finally, the blog site is not too bad, it's a different layout, but I will say that none of your Title images look good at all. None of them say "come back and view me again later", they're just sort of there filling space, looking b-rate.
I just have to reiterate that the Blog and Forum site have poor color choices. They just look bland. He should have at least chosen the blue color from the business site. Good luck freelancer, you're not quite there yet.
