"Select your Pencil Tool one more time and with the same color of your pattern try to delete some of your image rectangles" - i used painbucket, it's easier i guess. and insted of 2 px pencil - 1 px for corners and 1 px selection tool vith paintbucket for lines

i mean light traces and 3d look

It is very simple.
Select Rectangular marquee tool
Go to edit > stroke ( use what settings you want )

then go to filter > Blur
Duplicate the layer, then place it with your arrow keys like in the following image
