Fade Color

I am creating a website for a competitive gaming team, I am trying to create a flash header, so far, here, I have it all done, except, when you move your mouse over a link, I would like it to fade to a green color like the header in the time frame of about a second. For the right links, they would fade to black. Then when the mouse is moved off, it would fade back to it's original color, even if it wasn't fully changed to green. How would I go about doing this? Keep in mind, I have NO idea what I am doing in flash, or how to apply actionscript to an element. I do know php and I am fluent in it, so I can easily understand how code works, since it's similar for each language. I have the links in flash as button symbols. Should I have made them a movie symbol? Can anyone please help me out with this?
